A 2016study by RAND corporation calculated the impact of insufficient sleep in the economy of developed countries. It costs between 1.35% to 2.92% of the GDP. In the US alone, the losses are estimated in US$411 billion every year. We developed a sleep calculator to estimate your personal impact on that amount.

Too many errors

According to a British medical journal, when you go between 17 to 19 hours without sleep, your reasoning capacity is similar to someone who has a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.05. 24 hours without sleep and this number increases to 0.10. To give you an idea of what it means: driving under the influence starts after a BAC of 0.8 and commercial drivers can’t go past 0.4. That means you could be more impaired than someone legally drunk.

Lack of sleep leads to mistakes, costing our economies enormous amounts of productivity. 

Bad decisions

Chernobyl, The Challenger explosion, Exxon Valdez oil spill and the American Airlines Flight 1420 crash. All those disasters were linked to decisions taken by sleep-deprived people. 

Impaired attention and focus

Many attention problems are diagnosed and treated with medications. Some of those cases might be related to lack of sleep. People under sleep debt have more difficulty to concentrate and need more time to return their attention to their main activity after a moment of distraction. 

Memory loss

Sleep triggers changes in the brain that consolidate short-term into long-term memories. Sleep deprivation diminish our capacity to retain new information and impairs our learning capacity. 

Reduced motivation

The feeling of tiredness caused by sleep deprivation have a significant impact in your motivation. This directly impairs your working capacity, increases procrastination and reduces work quality.
